The Eucharistic Theology of Matthias Joseph Scheeben in Ecumenical perspective

Abstract

L’ articolo esamina la teologia eucaristica di Matthias Joseph Scheeben nell’opera I misteri del cristianesimo da una prospettiva ecumenica. Scheeben sviluppa la dottrina scolastica della transustanziazione in termini esplicitamente cristocentrici ed ecclesiologici, attingendo ampiamente dalla Scrittura e dai Padri. Egli presenta l’Eucaristia come il prolungamento dell’Incarnazione che ha inaugurato quell’unione sostanziale tra Dio e l’uomo, fondata sull’unità sostanziale della Trinità e completata nell’unione sostanziale del credente con Cristo nell’Eucaristia. Egli sottolinea il significato mistico del Sacramento come incorporazione in Cristo e glorificazione di Dio, da cui argomenta la necessità della transustanziazione come modalità specifica della conversione eucaristica. This article examines Matthias Joseph Scheeben’s eucharistic theology in The Mysteries of Christianity from an ecumenical perspective. Scheeben develops the scholastic doctrine of transubstantiation in explicitly Christocentric and ecclesiological terms, drawing richly on Scripture and the Fathers. He presents the Eucharist as the prolongation of the Incarnation which inaugurated that substantial union between God and man, grounded in the substantial unity of the Trinity and completed in the substantial union of the believer with Christ in the Eucharist. He emphasises the mystical significance of the Sacrament as the incorporation into Christ and the glorification of God, from which he argues for the necessity of transubstantiation as the specific mode of eucharistic conversion. His account resonates with Orthodox emphases on theosis, Anglican patristic sensibilities, and Protestant concerns for Christocentrism, offering ecumenical resources that remain faithful to Catholic tradition.
