Rivelazione e Regola, una tensione di Francesco non risolta

Abstract

Il contributo analizza il processo di formazione della Regola dei frati Minori alla luce della tensione tra intuizione carismatica e progressiva istituzionalizzazione dell’esperienza francescana. A partire dall’incontro tra Francesco d’Assisi e Innocenzo III, lo studio mostra il percorso redazionale della Regola, dalle prime formulazioni fino alla Regola bollata del 1223 approvata da Onorio III, evidenziando un processo complesso di discernimento comunitario e di mediazione tra le diverse sensibilità interne all’Ordine e le esigenze della curia romana. L’analisi delle fonti agiografiche e storiche mette in luce il ruolo dei capitoli generali, dei frati “dotti”, dei ministri e delle autorità ecclesiastiche nella definizione normativa dell’Ordine: in questo contesto, emerge il delicato equilibrio tra carisma e istituzione. Il Testamento di Francesco rappresenta, infine, il tentativo di custodire l’intuizione originaria dell’esperienza evangelica, ma al tempo stesso rivela una tensione non del tutto risolta tra fedeltà all’ispirazione primitiva e sviluppo istituzionale dell’Ordine.

This contribution examines the process of formation of the Rule of the Friars Minor in light of the tension between charismatic intuition and the progressive institutionalization of the Franciscan experience. Beginning with the encounter between Francis of Assisi and Innocent III, the study traces the editorial development of the Rule, from its earliest formulations to the Regula bullata of 1223 approved by Honorius III, highlighting a complex process of communal discernment and mediation between the different sensibilities within the Order and the requirements of the Roman Curia. The analysis of hagiographical and historical sources sheds light on the role of the general chapters, the “learned” friars, the ministers, and ecclesiastical authorities in the normative definition of the Order. In this context, the delicate balance between charisma and institution clearly emerges. Finally, Francis’s Testament represents an attempt to preserve the original intuition of his evangelical experience, while at the same time revealing a tension that remained unresolved between fidelity to the founding inspiration and the institutional development of the Order.
