Abstract

Il testo interpreta il Cantico di frate Sole come il testamento spirituale di Francesco d’Assisi, soprattutto nella strofa su “sorella morte”, composta alla fine della sua vita. La morte non è vista come negativa, ma come orizzonte che illumina tutta la sua esperienza e genera la scrittura come risposta alla perdita. Il Cantico diventa così chiave di lettura della sua esistenza, segnata da riconciliazione con sofferenza, crisi interiore e fragilità. Originale è il ruolo delle creature, mediatrici della lode a Dio al posto dell’uomo, incapace e indegno di nominarlo. Ne emerge una visione teologica cosmica e inclusiva, in cui tutta la creazione partecipa alla relazione salvifica tra Dio e l’umanità. Il Cantico, nato nella sofferenza, si trasforma così in un canto universale di lode e fraternità. Esso rappresenta infine una sintesi spirituale della vita di Francesco, capace di unire esperienza personale e visione universale.

The text interprets the Canticle of brother sun as the spiritual testament of Francis of Assisi, with particular focus on the verse concerning “sister death,” composed at the end of his life. Death is not understood negatively, but rather as a horizon that illuminates his entire experience and gives rise to writing as a response to loss. The Canticle thus becomes a hermeneutical key to his whole existence, marked by reconciliation with suffering, inner crisis, and human fragility. Especially noteworthy is the role attributed to creatures, seen as mediators of praise to God, who sustain the human being in his unworthiness and enable him to offer fitting praise. From this emerges a broad, cosmic, and inclusive theological vision, in which all creation participates in the salvific relationship between God and humanity. Born in a context of profound suffering, the Canticle is transformed into a universal hymn of praise and fraternity. It ultimately represents a spiritual synthesis of Francis’s life, capable of uniting personal experience with a universal vision.
